Eddie's Son Exploring Chorus After Sports Only Debate

A conversation about kids, sports, and music turned into something bigger when Eddie shared a story about his son. His son is naturally athletic, loves basketball, and has been playing since he was four. But when the topic of joining band came up, Eddie wasn’t exactly encouraging. In his mind, his son is an athlete and athletes do athlete things. That’s where the debate began.

One perspective was that maybe the interest in band wasn’t about the music at all. Maybe it was a way for his son to connect, to explore something different, or even to see if that could be something they shared. Kids don’t always articulate their reasons clearly, but curiosity often shows up before commitment. Eddie explained that his son did end up joining chorus at school, though it didn’t quite go as planned. According to him, his son mostly lip-syncs instead of singing, which raised even more questions. If he’s not actually singing, why join at all? The answer might be as simple as wanting to try something new without fully diving in.

From Eddie’s point of view, the concern isn’t music itself, it’s time. Between four basketball practices a week, multiple games, and weekend tournaments, adding an instrument that requires daily practice just doesn’t feel realistic. If his son truly wanted to quit basketball and focus entirely on music, Eddie says he’d support that. But that would mean giving up something he’s loved and committed to for most of his life. That logic didn’t sit well with everyone. There was pushback on the idea that kids, especially boys, get pushed into sports while creative interests are treated as secondary. Music, after all, is something you can carry with you for life.

Eddie shared that he had introduced his son to music early on, even taking him to School of Rock at four years old. At the time, it didn’t click. Basketball did.

In the end, no one claimed to have the perfect answer. Sports matter. Music matters.
