Maren Morris Reveals Details About Her ‘Traumatic’ ‘American Idol’ Audition

Maren Morris may be releasing hit after hit and selling out shows all over the world but before she became a country star, she was just trying to get noticed.

The "GIRL" singer was a guest on Late Night with Seth Meyers Wednesday (September 4) where she opened up about her early days as a singer/songwriter. After talking about performing at county fairs, the 29-year-old singer confessed she tried out for every talent competition show under the sun.

In addition to The Voice, she unsuccessfully auditioned for "everything you could think of: America's Got Talent, American Idol, Star Search — when that was a thing — all of it," she explained. "It was all a 'no.'"

From there, she confessed she had a pretty traumatic experience when she auditioned for American Idol in Dallas when she was a teenager.

"You audition for a 20-year-old producer who has, probably, no music cred," she said. "You just sing for like eight seconds and sing your heart out and my entire group got cut… I just remember being like 17 and I had to walk through the walk of shame out to the parking lot and find my mom's car and just cry on the way home with her."

Thankfully, as we all know, things turned out just fine for Morris. After deciding to take center stage as a singer after being a songwriter, Morris has made a huge name for herself in country music with her hit songs.

"The poetic justice of that whole thing is that now people audition with my songs on those shows," she laughed. "So, I just get the check in the mail."

Maren Morris is performing at this year's Daytime Stage at the iHeartRadio Music Festival in Las Vegas on September 21st alongside a lineup of incredible rising stars. A lineup of superstars are also set to perform on the main stage at T-Mobile Arena throughout the weekend, and fans across the country can tune in and watch an exclusive live stream of the show via The CW App and CWTV.com. Then, on October 2nd and 3rd, relive all of the epic performances from the weekend during a televised special on The CW Network at 8pm ET/PT. And leading up to the official television special, The CW will also air an hour-long Best Of Special on Sunday, September 29th at 8 p.m. ET/PT.
