Garth Brooks shared the story about the first dinner he shared with now-wife Trisha Yearwood and his three daughters, Taylor, August and Allie.

Brooks caught up with Jimmy Kimmel on Jimmy Kimmel Live on Monday night (November 25). The country megastar opened up with Kimmel about his family’s holiday traditions, including an emotional moment that Brooks spoke about decorating the Christmas tree as a family, and more. Kimmel asked Brooks about the first dinner he and his daughters shared with Yearwood, and the “Friends In Low Places” artist reflected on the unexpected meal he shared with the Trisha’s Southern Kitchen star:

“First of all, I have to ask the three girls their permission to get married. So we go out to a nice dinner, me and the three girls. And I’m trying to explain to them that I would like to marry Ms. Yearwood, and I said, ‘but you girls have to take care of her. If something happens to me, she’s your responsibility.’ And the table kind of got sober. And the youngest one, Allie, said ‘we got your back, bra strap.’ That was it. Conversation was over. that was it. And so, they decided that they were going to cook dinner for her… It was fantastic. But then they brought up the ‘eat like dog’ night. ‘Eat like dog’ night, we just had to have some fun at the house. so, you just make spaghetti in the mildest sauce you can, you say your prayer, bang your fork three times on the (table), throw it over your shoulder and just go in (face first). and that’s what they decided to do for Miss Yearwood’s first night. …We have a democracy in our house, and I said ‘we’re gonna put this to a vote.’ Three to one, I got voted down..”

Brooks he, Taylor and Allie “just went right in,” but admitted Yearwood hesitated. He told Kimmel that the “eat like dog” night ended with August standing on a chair and giving Yearwood a push toward her plate, and Yearwood giving August a push back, and “those two have been peas and carrots ever since.” Brooks and Yearwood got married in December 2005.
