Man Charged With Murder After Allegedly Beating Woman With Scooter

California officials have charged a 27-year-old transient with murder after he randomly attacked a 63-year-old woman last week on a sidewalk in Long Beach in broad daylight. Police say that Amad Rashad Redding approached Rosa Elena Hernandez, knocked her to ground and started stomping on her. He then grabbed an electric scooter and continued to beat her with it. She was pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics.

Redding fled the area and was arrested at a convenience store about four hours later. He is being held on a $2 million bail and is facing life in prison if he is convicted. Officials have not determined why Redding decided to attack Hernandez.

Redding spent time in a Louisiana mental hospital following an arrest in January after being accused of setting a fire in his family's home. He was transferred to prison in February and was released after posting a $5,000 bond. Officials in Louisiana say that the arson case against him is still open.
